Product Description

The SAM Splint is used by emergency care providers and outdoor enthusiasts worldwide (even on NASA space shuttles) and is based on the principle that curves are strong. The SAM® SPLINT is built from a thin core of aluminum alloy, between two layers of closed-cell foam.

Here we offer one each of the most popular SAM Splints: (1) Standard Size 36" and (1) Junior Size 18" Sam Splint. See our other SAM Emergency Splints in this section to purchase these pontentially life saving splints seperately.

The SAM Splint is used for a multitude of medical emergencies to include broken bones, fractures, sprains and any injury that warrants the imobolization of a limb, apendage or body part.

The SAM® SPLINT is extremely pliable and bent into any of three simple curves. The SAM Splint becomes extremely strong and supportive for any fractured or injured limb.

The reason for the success of the SAM Splint lies in the curved surfaces, the same physics that allow skyscrapers and bridges to be built with current day technologies. In the SAM Splint, a flat piece of sheet metal bends easily, but if you mold it into any of several “structural curves,” it becomes much more rigid.

The SAM Splint is so strong that people have even used it as an emergency canoe paddle or snow shovel. The SAM® SPLINT Emergency Splint can even be used to create an emergency cervical collar for neck injuries.

We offer the two most popular and versitile styles: the full size 36" and the smaller 18" version of the Sam Splint. Both are the standard 4.25" wide. We feel that this combination will be the most versatile to cover just about any injury that can be aided by a splint. We highly recommend that at least one Sam Emergency Splint be carried in your medical or survival kit.

Sam Splint Testimonials

While working as an outdoor safety instructor and as rescue technician there were many times I wished for a quicker, easier way to stabilize a severe sprain, strain or fracture and it wasn’t until SAM Splints came along that a way of doing just that became available. When a comfortable, easy to use, reliable method of stabilizing a fracture and reducing the associated pain is needed it doesn’t come any better than a SAM Splint. Even those outside the medical community, when faced with stabilizing an injury to an extremity, can use a SAM Splint effectively. They require little training to use, they are simple to apply and most importantly they are effective. I always carry a SAM Splint in my emergency equipment. It is my method of choice for those infrequent situations when the need to stabilize a fracture is required. In a survival situation the real value of a piece of equipment is not just that it accomplishes what it is designed to do but that it can also be used to solve many other problems faced by those in trouble. I have modified SAM Splints into everything from oil pipe covers to funnels, wind screens and even a frame for a wash basin. I don’t leave home without a SAM Splint in my emergency gear.

For 20 years I have advised medical personnel on what medical gear to take on expeditions. These folks often ask me what I include in my kit, no matter where I'm traveling, no matter how short the trip . . . The answer: a few important medications, some tape and always a SAM® SPLINT. No other device allows for so many variations for treating an unimaginable variety of orthopedic emergencies.

The SAM® SPLINT is a versatile tool that should be a part of every certified athletic trainer’s field kit.

This splint is pure genius...light and compact, yet strong and resilient. I keep one in my pack on every hike up to and back from Everest Base Camp. I won't leave home without it!

Safety Tips:

If prolonged use of the SAM Splint is anticipated (more than a few hours), place absorbent material, such as cotton cloth, between the SAM Splint and the skin to prevent skin irritation and odor. Also, to prevent uncomfortable pressure points during prolonged use, place soft padding (such as gauze pads) around all boney prominences. When cutting the splint, avoid using serrated scissors as they may produce sharp edges. After cutting the splint, roll the cut end over or apply tape to cover any exposed metal.

Curve for Strength

A SAM® SPLINT without any bends is completely malleable. When a curve or fold is placed across its longitudinal axis, it is rigid and suitable for splinting. With the proper curve, almost any bone in the body can be splinted. Use the C-Curve, the Reverse C-Curve and the T-Curve to add strength and rigidity for all applications of the SAM® SPLINT. The C-Curve: Curve the SAM® SPLINT lengthwise to create a longitudinal bend which gives the splint strength.
The Reverse C-Curve: Curve the outside edges the opposite direction to make it even stronger. The T-Curve: Double the SAM® SPLINT or create a T-Curve for extra strength.
